MaPPING THE SOUTHERN

EMIGRANT TRAIL

This project involved determining the location of the trails through Riverside County that were used in the mid-1800s.  Much of the information was found in surveyors’ field notes from the 1850s and 1860s.  Diaries and journals of travelers during that time period and early newspaper reports provided additional information as did a number of other sources.  In some places current photographs were taken and then altered to show how the area would have appeared 150 years ago.  The points along the routes were identified in terms of latitude and longitude and marked on current topographical maps.

The City of Temecula has put some of this information on its website.  See
